Resignation

I don’t enjoy resigning from work. They always ask why and I struggle to come up with a reason that even sound coherent to myself. Being entirely bored with the work, the office and the staff just feels like a pretty piss poor excuse. So after being repeatedly asked, I gave this as my resignation letter to HR.

Dear Messrs [Firm Name]

As verbally discussed, I hereby tender my resignation from [Firm Name] to be effective as from Thursday <Date>.

I have varied reasons for ending my employment with [Firm Name] and would like to spend some time identifying the issues as a feedback mechanism for your reference. I have summarised these below and expanded on each at a further point:

·         Lotus Notes

·         Undefined roadmap for world peace

·         Sexual Harassment (lack thereof)

·         Printer Locations

Some employees think the great bane of [Firm Name] is the stairs from level 17 to 16 but it isn't. The great bane is in fact Lotus Notes - the email and calendaring software that was chosen for reasons which aren't really clear to anyone. I have seen the due diligence report on the software and instead of a logical and concise conclusion the preparer has simply drawn a picture of a camel. It's not that the software is poorly developed (although that is true), it's not that the menu and selections are unintuitive (although again, this is true) it's that the Lotus is a product of IBM. Why [Firm Name] would choose to support a company that specifically built a supercomputer to out think and outsmart humans and thereby bringing forward the date when robots take over the world is totally beyond me. Think ahead [Firm Name] and when you are choosing software try and envisage a future that doesn't result in our children working under the dreadful yoke of an evolved computer overlord.

There has never been any doubt that I am a strong advocate of social responsibility. Whereas other firms and corporations have a definitive policy on global issues like the middle east crises or even local concerns like New Zealand, [Firm Name]'s policy on social responsibility is cloudy and misguided (at best). Potential clients could well be turned away by the fact the management of [Firm Name] is yet to issue any commitment at all to harmonising the political strife within the world. A firm hand is needed and while the management should be aware that they cannot solve anything alone, [Firm Name] can be a leader and encourage other firms to raise their voices as a single chorus.

I have long resented the fact that there has been a severe lack of sexual harassment in my work environment. The taboo regarding this subject has held my opinion unspoken in this regard and perhaps this is my own fault. My team (and work area) is comprised of a large percentage of females and at no point during my tenure at [Firm Name] have any of them (or the males for that matter) even attempted any form of sexual harassment. Self-doubt, drop in self-esteem and depression - all these things I have been forced to endure. It is a sad reflection on the people in my team that they missed (possibly on purpose) valuable opportunities to brush against me or discuss the tightness of my pants. I would like to think that my successor, be they male or female, is supported by his or her team with constant innuendo and frequent close contact and maybe, just maybe, this work environment can become a little more rewarding for all.

The location of printers around the office has been a great concern to me ever since I began my employment at [Firm Name]. The closest printer to my work area is approximately four metres, which on average amounts to a ten - fifteen second round trip which could be used more productively. At several points during my employment I have requested a printer to be relocated closer to my desk or failing that a trained helper monkey to be able to collect my printing - all my requests were denied. After two years, this has reached an intolerable level and a thorough review of efficient printer footprint models needs to be made. I would like to think the sacrifices I have made will enable future employees to enjoy more efficient print-out collection.

I have raised these issues not to burden or cast blame on anyone in [Firm Name] but as a true hope that by opening up discourse on these concerns we can improve the working environment for all. I truly wish success to [Firm Name] in the future and should whatever I be doing next prove unsuitable to my lifestyle decisions I would dare to believe I could return without questions that would ultimately prove ….. unpleasant.

Yours faithfully
Jean-Roge
